NewsVisual decided to create an IntellectSpace Knowledge Map in order to illustrate the personal connections of Yahoo’s and Google’s Board of Directors.

The Knowledge Map shows that two of Yahoo’s Directors have links to four of Google’s Directors through three organizations.

More specifically, Yahoo CEO/Director Jerry Yang is connected to Google’s Co-Founders/Co-Presidents/Directors Larry Page and Sergy Brin through Stanford University, where all three pursued advanced degrees as graduate students.

However, the vulnerability is the result of poor data handling by the sites’ creators, rather than a specific Microsoft flaw …

At first glance, it seems like a regular blog. But look closer and you’ll see there’s something very odd about the blog’s content: It’s very familiar. Too familiar.

That’s because you wrote it — six months ago on your own blog. The rest of the content doesn’t make sense: The same word repeated over and over again. There are ads all over the sidebar for products like Viagra and mortgage loans.

This, you realize, is a splog, and you’re the victim.

“Splogs,” or spam blogs, are one of the methods spammers have adopted to manipulate the blogosphere for profit. The phenomenon started getting really bad in 2005, when Google’s blog-hosting service, Blogger, was inundated with more than 13,000 fake blogs spawned by a script …

I am fascinated by Twitter; I can’t explain why. I was a little surprised by some of the stats in today’s New York Times story about Twitter: “Nearly 1.2 million users visited Twitter in December, a 223 percent increase over the same month the previous year, according to comScore Inc.” And Hitwise, which measures site traffic, put Twitter at 765th most popular in January, out of 6,000 social networks. But that doesn’t include people who access Twitter via text message or instant message or third-party applications; that number would be much higher.

See? Fascinating. Since the Post-Dispatch started Twittering regularly, I began keeping track of which newspapers Twitter and how many followers they have. Most remarkable is the percentage of change each month. Newspaper circulation is dropping like a rock. But a 30 percent increase in Twitter “subscribers”? Not unrealistic.

The inimitable phenomenon known as internal combustion is responsible for many unappealing things that plague the globe. Industrial waste. War. Virtual torrents of angels’ tears. But none is more a challenge to the progress of the human race than the creeping, crawling, abhorrent thing we call roadway traffic. Yes, bumper-to- bumper is in fact the ultimate bane of society, and the engineers at Google Maps have seen their users within the American citizenry rage long enough in contention with slow-going bottlenecks. Those in Mountain View have decided to stir the technological cauldron some more as of late, and have now come out with a new feature for drivers 30+ metropolitan areas looking to get from A to B in as few minutes as possible. Enter, Google Maps traffic prediction.

Yes, not only will Google explain to Maps users what’s happening at the moment they step out the door from home, school, or the office, it will now serve people in and around over 30 US cities with hour-to-hour traffic predictions for specially customized directions, according to Ionut Alex Chitu of Google Operating System.

Mind you, this isn’t the first we’ve seen a technology giant offer such detailed traffic analysis for no charge to the consumer. Only last week Microsoft introduced an AI system atop its Live Maps service, dubbed Clearflow, which, in effect, delivers a similar result …

However the lead singer for the band OK GO, Damian Kulash Jr. wrote a terrific Op-Ed piece in The New York Times the other day that concisely and graphically outlines the issues in Net Neutrality.

Kulash’s last line is superb: “If network providers are allowed to build the next generation of the Net as a pay-to-play system, we will all pay the price.”

The maker of the popular photo-editing software Photoshop on Thursday launched a basic version available for free online.

San Jose, Calif.-based Adobe Systems Inc. says it hopes to boost its name recognition among a new generation of consumers who edit, store and share photos online.

While Photoshop is designed for trained professionals, Adobe says Photoshop Express, which it launched in a “beta” test version, is easier to learn. User comments will be taken into account for future upgrades.

Photoshop Express will be completely Web-based so consumers can use it with any type of computer, operating system and browser. And, once they register, users can get to their accounts from different computers.

Web-based software is increasingly popular, and Adobe knows it’s got to get on that train, said Kathleen Maher, an analyst at Jon Peddie Research.

Many kinds of software are available for use online in a trend known as “software as a service,” or “cloud computing.” The earliest were e-mail programs, but they now include services to create and manage content and even whole operating systems. And they don’t require time-consuming upgrades because they’re maintained by the service provider.

Google Inc. provides a host of such services, as do Microsoft Corp. and others.

“This is the battlefield where Adobe and Microsoft and Google are going to fight some pretty big battles,” Maher said.

Photoshop enters the online photo-management arena many years after such services first appeared. Some companies have already made a big name for themselves, like 9-year-old storage solution Shutterfly Inc., photo-editing service Picnik or image-sharing site Photobucket Inc …
